At Rome City Institute, student life revolves around inclusivity and diversity — values that have been core to who we are since our founding. From your first day to graduation, you’ll find a community built to help you feel at home in Rome.
Moving abroad for school is a big step, and we know the first few weeks can feel like a lot all at once — a new city, a new language, and a new rhythm of daily life. That’s why our staff is with you from day one, especially during the first weeks of the semester, to help you get settled: from navigating the neighborhood and setting up daily essentials, to simply having someone to ask when something feels unfamiliar.
Our goal is for every student to feel like part of the Rome City community quickly, not just enrolled in a program. Whether you’re here for a full degree, a semester abroad, or a gap year, our team is on hand throughout the year to support the transition — academically, logistically, and personally — so you can spend less time worrying about the details and more time actually living your life in Rome.
Staff-led orientation at the start of the school year to help you settle in, meet other students, and get comfortable with your new city.
Our team is available year-round for day-to-day questions, so you’re never navigating Rome on your own.

Despite being one of the smallest in Europe, Rome’s metro system is fast and reliable, covering several areas of the city center across three lines. The city’s bus network runs throughout the day and into the night, reaching areas the metro doesn’t cover.

Moving to Italy comes with a few essentials to sort out — a student visa if you’re coming from outside the EU, and valid health insurance for the full duration of your studies. Our legal department guides every student through both, step by step, once you’re enrolled.
Students from European Union (EU) or EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland) can enter Italy with a valid passport or EU ID card. They are allowed to stay in Italy without a visa for the entire duration of their studies.
For students from non-EU countries, a Student Visa (Type D) is required for any stay longer than 90 days. This visa must be obtained prior to entering Italy and is issued by Italian Embassies or Consulate-General offices in your home country. Once you are officially enrolled at Rome City Institute, our legal department will guide you through every step of the visa process, ensuring you have all the necessary support to successfully obtain your visa.
L'Italia vanta un solido sistema sanitario ed è nota per avere alcuni dei migliori medici e ospedali al mondo, con una delle aspettative di vita più alte al mondo.
In accordance with Italian law, all non-Italian students enrolled at Rome City Institute are required to have valid health insurance coverage for the entire duration of their studies in Italy. Typical health plans from the U.S. or other countries often do not meet these requirements.
To simplify the process and ensure you have the necessary coverage, we provide our own mandatory private health insurance plan, designed specifically for students studying abroad. It covers accidents and illnesses, plus additional benefits such as mental health services, medical evacuation, repatriation, and even security evacuation if needed. It also offers worldwide coverage and includes access to a 24-hour emergency assistance hotline for immediate support.
This insurance is not a replacement for your comprehensive health insurance back home — it serves as supplemental coverage while you are studying in Italy. Please do not cancel any existing insurance plans in the U.S., as this plan will not cover medical expenses within the United States.
With 24/7 emergency operators available, our health insurance provider can assist with coverage questions related to pre-existing conditions, emergency repatriation, specialist medical visits, prescriptions, physical therapy, mental health, and more. In cases of a medical emergency, coverage even extends to flying a parent or guardian to your location.
We require all non-European students to carry our mandatory private health insurance. If you wish to use an alternative policy, you will need to provide a certificate from your insurer detailing the specific coverage for residing in Italy, including any restrictions. Depending on your country of origin and insurer, your existing policy may not offer sufficient coverage.
As a European student, you are generally covered in Italy through reciprocity agreements with your home country’s national healthcare system, so our private health insurance is not mandatory for you. However, depending on your country of origin, this coverage may not be comprehensive — for greater security and access to extensive benefits, we still strongly recommend enrolling in our health insurance plan.
